Who we are

A Dance Group

Founded in 1992, members of the Angyalföldi Vadrózsa Ensemble have spent the last 20 years deepening their knowledge in Hungarian folk dance. This vivid group had the chance to perform on stages of dance festivals, concerts and TV shows in several countries in Europe, North America and Asia. Now counting more than a hundred members in all age groups; we learn, research, teach and perform Hungarian dances of the Carpathian Basin, as well as dances of minorities living together with our culture.

A Local Community

Our members formed a small governance board, which makes sure the dance groups have their tours and performances organized, proper operational budgets aligned, and can focus on the core activity; dance. Members of this governance board are professionals with a vast scale of expertise, helping the group on a voluntarily basis in their free time. The association is registered as a small NGO, and we keep constant contact with other groupings of the civil society close to, and far away from us.

Members of our groups (kids, adults and alumni) are members of a close-knit community. The power of dance and the excitement of exploring a common heritage were the drivers for the creation of the group, but after many years now we really form a strong local community in Budapest. Family days, camps and competitions make our life exciting, and we always try to involve as many members of the community in the 13th district of Budapest as possible.

The  Angyalföldi Vadrózsa Folk Dance Ensemble is one of the most renowned folk dance ensembles in Hungary. Vadrózsa (or wild rose in Hungarian) was established 30 years ago in Angyalföld, (the ’Land of Angels’) – the nickname for the XIIIth District of Budapest. Since its foundation, the group’s mission has been to recognize, preserve, and disseminate authentic Hungarian folk dance and music through teaching and performance. The group is dedicated to highlighting the abundant folk traditions and cultural treasures of the Carpathian Basin on the global stage. The ensemble has an ethos based on community building and educating the next generation.

In addition to adult ensemble,  Vadrózsa manages six other dance groups, ranging from ages 3 to 60. The entire ensemble is one large family, consisting of over 250 dancers. Through regular participation in nationwide dance festivals and competitions, they have earned numerous accolades over the past decade, consistently achieving outstanding results in both ensemble and solo categories.

Vadrózsa’s artistic directors, Lili Fundák-Kaszai and Kristóf Fundák, are one of Hungary’s most outstanding educators and performers in the folk dance space. In 2024, Fundák was awarded the highest national honor that a choreographer can receive in Hungary. For years, they have  taught and choreographed throughout Hungary and in global Hungarian diasporas including in the United States and Canada.

In addition to showcasing authentic Hungarian folk dances, the Ensemble is open to other artistic genres, which is why its repertoire includes several contemporary works and dance theater pieces. This being said, wherever Vadrózsa is present, broad impact remains one its key aspirations.  Making Hungarian dance and music accessible to diverse audiences is a fundamental value shared by the entire ensemble. The Legacy Tour 2024 hopes to further this very effort by serving as a large-scale outreach to different communities within the United States.

ABOUT THE SHOW

Vadrózsa will undertake a five-city tour of the East Coast of the United States. The highlight of the performance series is the commemoration organized jointly with the Embassy of Hungary, Washington, DC, which pays tribute to the memory of the revolution and freedom struggle of October 23, 1956. The revolution is one of the most significant events in Hungarian history, which began with a peaceful demonstration by University of Budapest students, and within a few days escalated into an armed conflict against the Soviet occupation. Although the uprising was crushed, its international impact played an important role in the process leading to the eventual fall of the Soviet Union.

During the revolution, approximately 200,000 Hungarians fled to Western countries, including more than 30,000 to the United States. As Vadrózsa planned its tour, the group prioritized visiting and performing in those communities inhabited by a significant number of Hungarians, including in many cases descendants of those who fled their homeland in 1956.

“In addition to commemorating the revolution, Vadrózsa’s performance will treat the audience to a spectacular and captivating authentic dance performance based on the rich folk dance and folk music tradition of the Carpathian Basin,” say Directors Fundák-Kaszai and Fundák. “At each of its tour stops, the show will be enhanced by handpicked talent from the local Hungarian folk community.”

Vadrózsa (’Wild Rose’) will take part in a five-city tour of the East Coast of the United States in the fall of 2024.
Our show's theme is closely tied to the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, after which a large wave of immigration added to the Hungarian diaspora in the United States.
In case you can’t make the show, this is a great opportunity to support the ensemble’s goal of experiencing a Hungarian immigrant’s path to the US.
In order to better immerse the folk ensemble's 48 members in the theme of the show, we'd like to visit Ellis Island's immigration archives in New York. Your support will be greatly appreciated!
